Volunteer

The Deering Estate at Cutler engages community volunteers to enhance and expand the reach of our Education and Interpretive Staff. We are always in need of helping hands for coastal clean-up, landscaping maintenance, butterfly gardening and much more. We are also seeking to train a dedicated corps of long-term volunteer docents to assist in conducting tours and recreation programs, archiving and collections management, and new program development. If you have a particular interest in sharing the many resources the Deering Estate at Cutler has to offer with others, we invite you to become one of our esteemed volunteers.

VOLUNTEER APPLICATION

All applicants are required to comply with Miami-Dade County’s policies, which may include submitting to a criminal background check and fingerprinting by the Park Department. Please bring your completed Volunteer Application to the Main Gate Ticket Booth. The booth is open daily from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

ESTATE DOCENTS

Docents greet visitors and conduct guided tours for visitors to the Estate. Each program lasts about an hour to an hour and a half and explores specific interpretive themes, including the Native American settlements, the Perrine Grant, the Town of Cutler, the life and interests of Charles Deering, and modern restoration and stewardship efforts. Docents may also host and serve as greeters during Estate-sponsored concerts and special events.

YOUTH VOLUNTEERS

The Estate has weekday, after school, and weekend volunteer opportunities available for youth ages 14 to 20 who wish to fulfill their service requirement for graduation, are seeking leadership and professional development, or who simply want to make a difference in their community.

VOLUNTEER WORKDAYS

From landscape maintenance in our butterfly garden to Earth Day and National Public Lands Day coastal clean-ups, the Deering Estate offers several half-day community service opportunities throughout the year for volunteers ages 9 and up. Pre-registration with the sponsoring organization is required, and children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

SERVICE PROJECTS

If you or your group would like to do its own short-term community service project at the Deering Estate, please tell us about it. Whether you are a Scout working toward Eagle Rank or you are part of a student organization in need of community service hours for graduation, we may be able host your project.

HOLIDAY DECORATING

Each year, the District XII Garden Clubs, the Miami Chapter of Ikebana International, JRE Lee Opportunity School 4-H, and FAFCS District J join forces in decorating the Estate's beautiful historic houses for the holidays. If your organization would like to participate or sponsor a room, we'd be glad to see your decorating plan. Our staff also needs assistance with moving decorations from storage in early November and back into storage in early January. If you can lift at least 50 lbs. and would like to help, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator.
