Volunteer

The Deering Estate at Cutler engages community volunteers to enhance and expand the reach of our Education and Interpretive Staff. We are always in need of helping hands for coastal clean-up, landscaping maintenance, butterfly gardening and much more. We are also seeking to train a dedicated corps of long-term volunteer docents to assist in conducting tours and recreation programs, archiving and collections management, and new program development. If you have a particular interest in sharing the many resources the Deering Estate at Cutler has to offer with others, we invite you to become one of our esteemed volunteers. The following unpaid positions are currently open.

ESTATE DOCENT: Conduct guided house tours and programs for visitors. Each program lasts about 1 hour and explores historical, architectural and/or artistic topics, including the Native American settlements, the Perrine Grant, the Town of Cutler, the life and interests of Charles Deering, and modern restoration and conservation efforts. Docents set up for activities, greet groups, lead tours and programs, and put away materials and equipment. They may also assist with special event set up; greet guests; operate the historic elevator; and assist at the will-call, information, and concession tables.

ECO-TOUR ASSISTANT: Assist with the Estate’s outdoor tours and programs for the public, including canoe and bicycle excursions and nature hikes. They set up equipment; greet groups; assist the Education & Interpretive Staff with activities; clean up; and put away equipment.
